Really, Leg Makeup?! Featuring Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs

First of all, let me say that I have passed this product a gazillion times in the drugstore thinking it was weird and gimmicky.  So, when Influenster sent me a complimentary Voxbox with this product in it to test, I was slightly disappointed, and there may have been an eye roll in there too...

I never though I would be a user of "leg makeup."  Actually, I try to avoid showing the world my legs at all.  Perhaps for this reason, my legs just do not tan.  It's like they know that they are happy to be covered and kept in the dark.  But sometimes, the legs have to come out...in all their pasty glory.  So, having a particularly busy Saturday with multiple parties, I had my outfit picked out and dare I say it, I was going to bare some leg!  Whoa, slow down there Em!  So, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try out the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs.

Here's the lowdown on my legs, they are hurt-your-eyes, pasty white, yet there's an eerie translucent quality to them...you can see veining and about 10 minutes after I shave, you can see the little hair dots (I'm Italian, folks).  So, I had high hopes that this "leg makeup"...seriously, foundation for your legs, would give me some coverage and evenness.

Knowing that self tanner streaks around ankles and knees, I applied a light body lotion to those areas first.  I squeezed the recommended quarter-sized amount into my palm and began to rub it onto my skin.  Pause, it looked a little orangey.  I continued to thoroughly massage it in...the tone was becoming less orange, more natural looking.  Observe...there was a noticeable difference in the tone of my legs and my veining and "hair dots" were visibly diminished.  Hmm, maybe not so gimmicky at all.  I finished the other leg.  Starting to feel like a jerk for thinking the product was ridiculous, I applied another coat to see if the color would deepen a bit to match my tanned arms.  I proceeded to parade around the house while the product set admiring my new legs!

There was a nice glow and tone - not in a self tanner kind of way, but an evenness that I had not had before.  Think about what foundation does for your face...this is what was happening to my legs.  Wanting to test if the product was transfer-resistant like the claims said, I put on an old pair of white pj pants and rubbed my legs.  No visible transfer!  The product also washed off my  hands completely, no orangey stains on my hands!!

So, final thoughts...would I buy this?  Part of me wants to say no because applying leg makeup seems a bit high maintenance, but the repressed high maintenance part of me says YES because it actually works despite the gimmicky nature of the product and I'll admit, it is kinda awesome!!  I have a wedding coming up at the end of the month, and I'm already thinking I need to use this again!  So, I give in...I'm officially a fan of leg makeup/leg foundation!  You changed my mind, Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs!  Thanks for convincing me add another beauty product to my arsenal!

A New Perspective - Beauty and Cancer

My big sister, Becca, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at the beginning of this year; she was 35 at the time of diagnosis.  Shock, sadness, fear, worry flooded my brain instantly. But a positive prognosis, countless doctors visits and treatments later, she is finished with chemo and about to embark on the next step of the journey - the double mastectomy.

Shame on me for thinking that my sister would let this setback dull her sparkling personality.  She's never operated that way.  She became my role model throughout this experience - Becca will find a way to crack jokes and see the positive in the situation.  Still proclaiming her heart is "bursting" with emotion and happiness and joie de vivre, she didn't lose that outlook one single bit, or maybe just to express some annoyance that she couldn't go on an exotic vacation this year.  She's embraced this experience, even using a picture of her bald head as her Facebook profile picture.

I thought a lot about whether or not I would have the courage to go sans wig/hat.  I can admit that I am vain at times.  Let's be real here, I love all things makeup and beauty.   We are talking way beyond hobby to full blown obsession.  But I don't resort to using makeup because I'm ashamed of how I look naturally or scared to go out in public without makeup.  I love discussing, applying, wearing makeup.  The very act of putting makeup on excites me; not because I want to hide my face, but because it's just plain fun.  I feel beautiful with or without makeup on, but indulging in my hobby obsession whenever I can gives me a different type of confidence.  It is more about being proud of the look I created on my face than feeling I need to cover up or hide myself.  So any opportunity to go to an event, whether it be at my local department store or Sephora or a workshop at our local cancer treatment center, I'm in.

Becca invited me to join her at a workshop called, "Look Good, Feel Better" designed to help those undergoing cancer treatment learn techniques with skincare and makeup including proper sanitizing guidelines to reduce exposure to germs, to how to fill in sparse or lost eyebrows, style wigs, picking the right colors to accentuate their complexions, etc.  I thought it would be interesting and give me a fun night out with my sister, but I wasn't prepared for how I felt after the event that night.

Being one of the few guests in a room surrounded by some of the strongest, bravest and most inspiring women I've encountered is humbling to say the least.  I've experienced my sister's fearless attitude firsthand; she comforts us when we need it, but watching the other women lift each other up was beautiful and awe-inspiring.  From the mom wanting to learn how to do her makeup for her son's wedding to the young woman with a fresh, purple pixie cut asking about picking wigs, they were their own community and sisterhood.  I'm a big, ol' awkward ball of emotional messy goop, and there were many moments throughout the night when I wanted to tear up (even now as I write this), but these women didn't want me to cry for them, they didn't want my pity; they were joking and happy and excited which almost made me feel ashamed for wanting to cry for them.

Each participant received a bag filled to the brim with skincare and makeup goodies all donated by cosmetic companies.  As the participants were unpacking their bags, they (and I) were in awe over the brands - Estee Lauder, Lancome, Dior, Chanel, Clinique, IT Cosmetics, Smashbox, and your typical drugstore brands like Revlon, Physician's Formula, Simple, Maybelline, etc, and full size products to boot!  As the volunteer licensed instructors were beginning the first step in their demo, I'll admit that a cloud of jealousy quickly passed over me...and then I felt like an asshole.  Really Emily, jealous that these women get free products because they have cancer.  Would I want to have cancer to get free makeup products?  No...and I was so ashamed that I could even have a thought like that pass through my brain, no matter how fleeting...

By the end of the demo, my sister had her eyebrows back and was so excited!  The instructors pointed out that she had made the biggest transformation of the night...not because the makeup hid her illness, yes, the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation evened out her complexion, but I could see that she was feeling some sort of normalcy again.  Small things like an eyebrow pencil and a fun shade of lipstick brought out that spark in my sister's personality, she was even getting sassy saying we should go to a bar!  She was glowing and beautiful, and it wasn't only the makeup application doing that.  It was coming from within.

Maybe I'm overthinking this...I tend to do that, but I strongly believe that makeup is about transformation; it doesn't have to be something shallow or make you feel ashamed of your looks.  It can enhance your natural beauty, make you feel "girly," give you confidence, help you feel like your old self, let you be a little daring one night.  The name and philosophy of the workshop - "Look Good, Feel Better" embodies how I feel about makeup and cosmetics.

I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to attend this event with my sister and witness those intimate moments of watching those women undergo their own transformations, even if just for a couple hours.  This experience has given me a wonderfully hopeful perspective on makeup and the possibilities that a little experimentation can hold.  You never know, something that seems insignificant (or even shallow to some) may turn out to have a greater impact that you could ever imagine.

PS. I thought it was exceptionally fitting that the mother of the groom received a gorgeous Chanel lipstick...cancer or no cancer, nothing makes you feel quite so glamorous as a Chanel lipstick!

I'm Back - Life Update and News!

Oh how I missed my blog!  But I'm back and feeling more committed than ever!

Through the fall and winter, I was going through some tough things - work crap, back injury crap, low self esteem crap, and the most sobering - my older sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Which, considering she is only 36, was utterly shocking, especially since we just witnessed Matt's Mom go through the same battle.  Her positivity is overwhelming and sometimes I feel guilty for being upset when she has such a positive outlook.  She truly finds the best in all situations, and this is no different.  Like she intended from the beginning, she has owned her cancer - rocking her shaved head, different wigs and hats, and not letting it dampen her spirit.  I'd expect nothing less from her, quite honestly, she's always been that way.  I wish I could be as strong as she is, but it isn't about fear of losing her; I have no doubt in my mind she is going to be perfectly fine.  It is just hard to watch her lose her energy and feel the effects from chemo.  I wish I could take her pain away, but she always has an energetic spark in her eye.  The next year will be tough as she continues her treatments, but she makes fighting cancer look good!

I'd intended to get back to blogging at the beginning of 2015, but that is when she got the diagnosis.  Writing about makeup and skincare seemed so trivial and ridiculous and superficial and shallow.  But she isn't letting cancer stop her from doing the things she loves, maybe postpone them a bit, but I think about her and instantly think - Joie de Vivre!  She embodies that phrase through and through.

So here I am, back and ready to take a page out of her proverbial book and do what I love!  And if I ever needed a distraction or a creative outlet, now is the time!  I've been told I'm the perfect candidate for disc replacement surgery for my back, I stopped my birth control and became a hormonal, pimply mess, and I've had some disappointments at work.  And I've still got the pimples....boooooo.  So, I might as well talk about something fun, right?

Part of my nightly routine to decompress before bed involved watching YouTube videos - mostly beauty related, of course.  And throughout the last year, I thought over and over that I could do that.  I have things to say about beauty products.  So, completely on a whim while alone at home yesterday afternoon, I filmed my very first YouTube video!  Why not?!?!?! Maybe no one will watch it, maybe no one will subscribe, maybe no one cares what I have to say, but that's ok!  I had a blast filming and editing, and I can't wait to feel that high again!  Though I may have had some technical difficulties with focusing and whatnot, I intend to follow through with this and learn as much as I can!!

Do you care what I have to say??  Join me on my channel - Emily Walker (no creative name yet) and watch my first video where I discuss my recommendations and wishlist for the upcoming Sephora VIB Sale!

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed - Rose Gold Review

love a good glow, who doesn’t?  But a swath of sparkly, frosty, discoball glitter across my cheek isn’t what I’m after these days.  I’m not 15 preparing for a high school dance by hitting up my local Claire’s for a new pot of glitter gel to match my bright purple eyeliner.  Ugh… the 90’s as a teenager.  These days, I want a more refined glow, just a hint, a god-your-cheekbones-look-fabulous-what-is-that kind of glow.

One glorious Sephora day, I absentmindedly stood at the Becca display swatching the Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed powder in Opal.  Nice, no other thoughts at the time, despite it being a huge fan fave.  I had been in the store for way too long getting the “are you ever coming home” texts from husband so I headed towards the register.  As I was signing away some hard earned cash working my way towards VIB Rouge status, my hand caught the light and WOW.  What a gorgeous sheen!!!!!  It was like hand was dusted with pure gold – not glitter, not sparkle, not frost, just sheen. Eeeeep…I needed that.  And I thought about it.  And I stalked it on the Sephora website.  But then, I noticed there was a Rose Gold shade in the collection.

Aaaah, not Rose Gold.  My weakness, I had fallen victim to the rose gold obsession and obviously neeeeeeeeeeeded it on my face.  *Add to cart* And I added a couple other items in there for good measure and free shipping.  I believe this started out as a limited edition holiday shade, but I think due to the response, Becca made it permanent.  But is it worth the $38 price tag??

Um, YES.  First, it is just gorgeous, in the pan and on my face.  Sometimes, I layer this under my blush and it gives an ultra-subtle glow.  Let’s be honest, there are some workdays where I just need to look alive, and this helps achieve that without being a full blown highlight.  When I’m a little more well-rested, I use it as a highlight on my cheekbones to achieve that glow from within.  I have warmer undertones, so the rose gold shade complements me quite well, and I like that I can use it as an extension of my blush.

Second, this is going to last forever if I don’t destroy it first.  Many reviews stated that it shatters quite easily.  It is so delicate and finely milled which helps achieve the smooth, buttery texture that sets it apart.  To apply, I ever-so-lightly tap the powder with my brush.  A little goes a very long way since it is so pigmented…perfection in a pan.  I’ve had this for months and barely notice a dent in the pan.  Some people also use this as an eye shadow; haven tried that, but for the price, you have to appreciate a multi-tasker.  So, when you consider your investment will last quite a long time, it is worth it, since you are barely using any product yet achieving amazing results.  I don’t mind shelling out the cash for products like that.

There’s a new limited edition Champagne Gold shade that was released for the holiday season.  Hmm…it may or may not already be in my Sephora website basket.

September Favorites...French Edition!!

Let's just ignore the fact that I skipped August favorites, shall we?  I thought I'd do something a little different for September.  Since I've been on a French product kick, I've amassed a lovely group of products that have proved to be standouts, so I thought I'd share some of my new loves.  And once again, I've got French products on the brain as I eagerly await the delivery of my first month of French Box.  The subscription box gods have answered my pleas with an all-French product subscription box.  Eeeeeep!  It can't come fast enough and I can't wait to see what French goodies I get.  Stay tuned for my thoughts on the French Box when it arrives!

I've posted a few times before about my French pharmacy hauls (and I may have had one or two more since then), so I thought I would devote a whole post to the products I've discovered that have become some of my favorites, dare I say it, holy grail...yikes!!  Lately, my favorite French website has been unable to complete orders.  *tear* However, I've found some other websites that have had comparable prices and shipping - Escentual and Cocoon Center.  I've probably been ordering more than I need and am actually making a super concerted effort to use up the products I have before ordering more.  As a self-declared beauty addict, I am not very good at finishing products...I usually find something else I like and move on.  But, that's changed...partly because I am just running out of space, and I just need to get in the habit of finishing things.  (I actually finished two items today - a Batiste dry shampoo and my Body Shop cleansing butter - woohoo!)

I won't get into the ins and outs of what you can find in the US vs other countries.  Check out my other posts if you want details on prices and shipping, just do your research - read to the end of this post and I'll explain my Effaclar Duo debacle.  So, here's are some of my discoveries that have turned into my favorites!  Allez, allez...keep reading!

Let me start by saying that since I've incorporated a lot of these skincare products into my routine, my face has been smooth, glowy, and almost blemish free.

Avene Thermal Spring Water (Eau Thermale) - A soothing spray for sensitive skin that contains the rich, thermal mineral water.  I used this to cool my face during the summer heat, to prep my skin after removing makeup.  It just provided a nice, fresh mist and helped keep my skin balanced, like a toner.  This was a repurchase based off of a sample I coincidentally received in my Ipsy bag - it was on my French pharmacy wishlist.

La Roche-Posay Lipikar Body Milk (Lipikar Lait) - I purchased a small tube of this originally because I was intrigued...no real reason.  It was a last minute add-on, but it was the first of all the products I immediately repurchased (an in a bulk package).  I began using this after my shower and it made my skin remarkably smoother - even my husband noticed.  I can tell when I go a couple days without it; it has truly become holy grail for me.

Klorane Mango Butter Conditioner - I wanted something tropical for a trip to the shore and I ended up loving the results.  My hair felt smooth and light and sooo incredibly soft.  It also reduced my frizz.  I have since repurchased and also picked up the shampoo so I could try them together.

Bioderma Hydrabio Micellar Water - Obviously had to try this...it is the one product that everyone lists in the French pharmacy must-haves and so many bloggers, MUAs, models rave out this.  I chose the formula for dehydrated skin and it has become a crucial step in my nighttime skincare routine.  I'm very impressed with how thoroughly it removes my makeup (especially eye makeup).  I put some on a cotton pad and will hold on my eyes for a few seconds to remove my eye makeup.  I've repurchased the original formula to try that out.

Vichy Normaderm 3-in-1 Cleanser, Scrub, Mask - I wanted to try a face cleanser that would help reduce and prevent blemishes.  I liked the versatility of this, it is gentle enough for me to use everyday, but gives me more options like a deeper exfoliating scrub or I've let it sit on my face to use as a mask.  This will be a definite repurchase.

Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Serum - I'm about halfway through this gorgeous, green glass bottle, using it day and night.  I feel like it makes my skin plumper and firmer and really preps my skin for my moisturizer.  I pair it with the Polyphenol Detox oil as part of my nighttime routine.  I truly haven't found a Caudalie product I have not loved, but this one stands out.

Homeoplasmine - A cult product with a texture between Vaseline and Aquafor.  I use this exclusively on my lips before bed when my lips are feeling cracked or dry and I wake up to smooth, plump lips.  There are lots of French lip products I really like - Nuxe Reve de Miel, Caudalie Lip Conditioner, La Roche-Posay Ceralips and I use them all, but this one has really impressed me with how quickly it worked for me.

Vichy Normaderm Hyaluspot - This is a blemish spot treatment of salicylic acid and LHA with hyaluronic acid which I found to be interesting.  Since I was a fan of the Normaderm 3-in-1, I wanted to try this spot treatment.  At first I was not impressed at all and even disappointed, but after having a particularly bothersome outbreak on my chin, I gave this another chance despite feeling that it was rather gimmicky.  I applied this before bedtime, and where other products had failed, I woke up to a very noticeable difference without the dry, patchy results I've gotten in the past with other products.  I was blown away and with continued use, my face was back to normal super quickly.

Now, this is why I say do research - my La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo debacle - when I tried to purchase Effaclar Duo with my first order, it was sold out.  I was beyond ecstatic to see it in my local CVS on sale, I bought it without hesitation...also without reading.  Here's where I made my rookie French skincare mistake - the formula for Effaclar Duo is different here in the US than it is in France.  It is much more abrasive and contains harsher ingredients than the "Made in France" version.  I never stopped to read my package to see that it said "Made in the USA" and slathered it all over my face, like the French version instructed me to do.  Within a day or two, I'm pretty sure I had given myself a chemical burn.  I could not apply other products or makeup without some pretty intense stinging, so I had to give my skin a break.  I also only used my American Effaclar Duo as a spot treatment.  I've finally got the French version sitting a drawer, but waiting until I use up the original before opening it up.

I'm always on the hunt for new French products to try!  Do you have any favorites or recommendations??

Birthday Haul at The Body Shop!

As part of the Love Your Body rewards program from the Body Shop, you receive a $10 coupon to use during the month of your birth!  I was feeling like treating myself and needed to replenish an item or two, so I checked out The Body Shop website.  I don't think I've ever paid full price for anything from TBS; they always have amazing deals on their website and combined with the 10% discount for having the Love Your Body rewards card, it is hard to stop clicking that Add to Cart button...anyone else have that problem or just me?

So, armed with the knowledge of discounts upon discounts and mix and match deals, I set upon a haulin' quest and did a bit of damage.  To successfully shop online, you must follow these steps.  First, stretch out your mouse clicking finger a few times, we don't need any cramping.  Second, decide if you want to ignore or obey the voice of reason in your head.  Third, having told the voice of reason to hit the road, prepare to shop.  And finally, pay attention to the product combinations that get you the best deals.  (To be honest, I initially tried to do this haul at my local store, but they couldn't find me in their system, and damn it, I wanted my discounts.  Turns out, the online deals were better.  Yay, I win!)

Without further ado, happy birthday to me from The Body Shop!

Wild Argan Oil Body Butter - travel and full size containers.  This is the newest line from TBS and since argan oil is all the rage, I wanted to try it.  Lately, I cannot moisturize my skin enough and this thick body butter does the trick.  It is verrrrry thick, thicker than the other body butters I've tried and has a pleasant smell.  I've noticed that it leaves a subtle sheen on the skin, too, which is nice.

Wild Argan Oil Solid Oil for Lips - I can't say no to a lip balm.  This has a very smooth texture, not overly greasy for being called solid oil.  I like wearing this alone (again, a nice sheen) and layering this under some of my more drying lip products.

Honeymania Body Butter - This was half off and I just wanted it.  A little lighter in texture than the Wild Argan Oil, it still feels great on the skin and smells pleasant.  I was worried that the honey smell would be too ovepowering, but nope, it's nice, perhaps more honeysuckle than "honey".  Seems to absorb a little faster on me than the Wild Argan Oil.

Honeymania Body Scrub -  I'm just about finished my Coconut Body Scrub and needed a new one.  I guess I became a bit of a Honeymaniac and sprung for this scrub instead of sticking with coconut.  Haven't used this yet, but it seems to have a much thicker, more pasty/pastier consistency than the coconut scrub which seems more creamy to me.  Interested to see how it compares.

Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter - down to the last dollop of this.  I didn't bring this on my recent vacation, and boy, did I notice a change in my skin.   Definitely won't make that mistake again.  And they do offer travel size bottles of the Camomile Cleansing Oil. *makes mental note*

I am trying two new masks - the Warming Mineral Mask and the Blue Corn 3-in-1 Deep Cleansing Mask.  Also on a mask kick, so looking forward to trying these out soon!

And finally, I'm remembering that I left two items out of the pictures...I also got the Honey Bronzer (obviously...what sort of beauty blogger would I be without it) and the Seaweed Pore Perfector which has been helping with my clogged pores (which I'm blaming on not using my Camomile Cleansing Butter for a week).

So overall, I did pretty well...I got all that, $163 of product for around $80.  After 50% off deals, free shipping, $10 off, 10% off and buy 3 get 2 free mix and match, I got 10 products for about $8 each.  I love the quality of The Body Shop's products, so I definitely got my money's worth and I'm really excited about using all of these!

What are your favorite products from The Body Shop??
